This year marks the 5th anniversary of Foolproof Living and I could not be more excited to introduce you to the new design. After several months of brainstorming, designing, and coding, the new look is finally ready. And today, I am here to give you a quick tour and tell you all about what is coming up.
As you may have already figured out, a lot has changed. During the design process, it was important to me to have a clean and easy to navigate website where you can find what you are looking for with the click of a button. Many of you requested a search button on the mobile version to find recipes without having to spend a lot of time clicking around. I am happy to say that I included that feature as well as many other that will help you explore with ease.
As you start clicking around, I think you will be excited to notice the following updates to the site:
For the first few years of Foolproof Living, my logo was a colorful bicycle. While I thought it was beautiful, as my style as a photographer and a blogger evolved, it felt a bit too colorful. Consequently, after my first year, I changed it to a logo that was much more simple. I chose a plain font and used that as the logo. However, for the new design, something with a little bit more personality and a story behind it was what was called for.
My mother loved leaves. For as long as I can remember, she collected leaves and dried them in between the pages of her books. To this day, every time I open up one of her books, I find dried leaves and feel as though she is with me. Since Foolproof Living waa started after she passed, it was important that the logo had a little bit of her in it. With the help of my dear friend Paula, we came up with this logo with a pretty leaf. Above are some variations that you will see me using in the new design.
As you may remember, last October I conducted a reader survey and asked for your opinion in the future of the site. Thank you to all of you who participated, your responses were so valuable and helped me shape my editorial content for the new year. After reading through all of your answers, it allowed me to narrow down the direction of the blog to ensure that I can deliver the type of content that you are looking for.
Here is what you can expect to see going forward:
Healthy Dinner Recipes: This was the number one request from almost everyone who filled out the survey. What to make for dinner seems to be the going theme in all of your lives. Believe me, I am no different. Additionally, some of you asked for more Turkish/Mediterranean main dishes.
Naturally Sweetened Recipes: In 2016, when I decided to switch from recipes made with refined sugars to natural ones, I was a little worried that I would lose some readers. I could not be more wrong. I was so happy to hear that you guys have been loving the honey, maple, Sucanat, and coconut sugar sweetened recipes that I have been sharing.
Recipe Roundups: It was such a surprise that many of you asked to see recipe compilations. You know, blog posts like 8 Last Minute Dishes for Christmas Baking, Best Recipes for your New Year’s Eve Party, etc.. Putting these together is still new to me, but from what I can tell you seem to be loving the few that are on the site already. Therefore, I created a new page for you that features curated recipes. It is on the menu just under the recipes.
Cooking Tips, How-Tos, and Cookbooks: You also asked me to share cooking tips, how-tos, and my favorite cookbooks. I have already started working on this and am looking forward to creating more content around my favorite subject, cooking. As someone who reads cookbooks like novels, sharing some of my favorites will be fun and exciting for me as well. These will be short but helpful blog posts to equip you with more knowledge in your own cooking adventures.
The New Video Page:
Before the switch, the quick and fun videos that I make were buried in blog posts and you could only see them when you went to that particular recipe. Now, I am sure you’ll be pleased to find them on their very own page. Since I plan on making more videos, I wanted a page that would allow you to pick and choose what you want to make and be able to watch it right then and there. And if you are into binge-watching, feel free to watch them all at once.
Resources for Bloggers and Photographers:
If you and I were friends and met up for coffee, chances are, our conversation would eventually come to blogging and/or photography. I love food and cooking, but I am also a nerd when it comes to being an entrepreneur and a creator. Truth be told, I am that crazy girl who walks around the house with earphones in her ears listening to podcasts about all this stuff constantly.
Over the last 5 years, I have learned so much, met so many people, and been granted so many opportunities. I feel like now is the time to pay it forward and share some of that knowledge with you. So I included a new menu item dedicated to the resources that brought me to where I am today. My plan is to answer the questions that I had when I was starting my own business to empower you to do the same.
There are still a few tweaks and errors here and there, but my awesome web designer Christina (of Meyne Websites) is working on those as I type this. If you are blogger and are in need of technical help, I cannot recommend her enough. She is one of the best developers I have ever worked with in all my 5 years of blogging. It is not easy to find someone who can make all of your requests possible with such a great attitude. None of this would have happened without her.
Finally, I would like thank YOU, the person who is reading this. I am so happy and humbled that you are here with me as I learn, grow, and share my adventures in this space. More good stuff is coming and I cannot wait to share with you. So click around, check out the site, and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear from you.
