Learn how (and how long) to steam asparagus using a steamer basket. Get all my tips on getting the perfectly steamed spears every time.
- Fresh asparagus - Lemon juice - Unsalted Butter - Salt & black pepper
Rinse asparagus under cool water. Dry it with a kitchen towel. Remove the woody ends (1-2 inches from the bottom).
Fill a large pot with just enough water to cover its bottom. You shouldn’t have to use more than a cup of water.
Place the steamer basket inside and spread the asparagus spears on top. It is okay if they are overlapping.
Put the lid on, and bring the water to a boil. Pan-steam the asparagus for 5-6 minutes or until tender.
Use a paring knife to check for doneness. If needed, cook longer (in 1 minute increments.) When done, transfer to a serving plate.

Don't Have a Steamer Basket?
No worries if you do not have a steamer basket! You can still steam asparagus using a pan, in the microwave and even using your rice cooker.
