Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh green beans rinsed, dried and trimmed
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs whisked
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • ½ cup shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste optional

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 370 degrees.
  • Add in the fresh green beans into the air fryer making sure that they are not overlapping. You may have to do this in two batches. Air fry for 2 minutes. Remove from air fryer onto a paper towel lined sheet pan. Let them cool for a few minutes.*
  • Meanwhile, set up the breading station by arranging three plates.
  • Place all purpose flour on the first plate. Place whisked eggs into the second plate. Finally, mix together panko bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, and garlic powder in the third one.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 390 degrees.
  • To bread the green beans, dip each green bean into the first plate with the all-purpose flour, then into the eggs, and finally into the panko breadcrumbs mixture.
  • Carefully transfer them into the air fryer basket. Air fry for 5 minutes making sure to turn them halfway through.
  • Remove them from the air fryer and allow them to cool for a few minutes. If preferred, season them with salt and pepper to taste before serving.

Notes

  • I know having to air fry them before breading is an extra step but during my recipe testing I found out that if you skip this step, they don't fully cook. The breading turns golden brown but the green beans are still raw. You can skip this step if you have blanched green beans on hand.
  • Storage: It's worth noting that green bean fries are best served fresh. If necessary, you can store them in an airtight container, but they will lose some of the crispy texture.
  • Freezing: I would not recommend freezing these. They are best when made fresh.
  • For a low carb/keto version, omit using all-purpose flour and use blanched almond flour in place of panko bread crumbs. You can also skip the step where you air fry them before breading them. To do so:
    1. Set up the breading station this time with only two shallow bowls. Whisk the eggs and place them in the first bowl. Then mix together almond flour, parmesan cheese, and garlic powder in the second bowl.
    2. Bread green beans: Dip green beans in eggs, and then into the almond flour mixture making sure to coat them on all sides. Collect the breaded green beans on a plate.
    3. Air fry breaded green beans: Place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket and air fry them at 390 F for 9-10 minutes making sure to turn them halfway through cooking.
    4. Serve: Let the green beans cool for a few minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste right before serving.
